How much honey does your family eat in a year?
According to statistics on annual per capita honey consumption, people in Greece consume about 2.5–3 kg of honey per year, those in Türkiye consume about 1–1.5 kg, and people in Germany consume about 1 kg. In contrast, the average person in Japan consumes only about 0.3 kg per year—roughly one-ninth as much as someone in Greece.
Greece is one of the world's leading beekeeping countries, where honey has long been an integral part of everyday food culture. In Japan, however, honey is still used mainly as a sweetener or a health food, and it has not yet become an everyday staple as it has in many parts of Europe.
As a result, there are still relatively few commercial and hobby beekeepers in Japan, and only about 6% of the honey available in the Japanese market is produced domestically.
The reason we first started beekeeping as a hobby in the United States was actually very simple: we wanted to enjoy truly delicious, safe, pure honey—and eat as much of it as we liked!
Our dream at BeeCamp is to see many more people in Japan discover the joy of beekeeping as a hobby and to help build a culture that appreciates and enjoys locally produced Japanese honey.
We'd love to help make that dream come true!
