When we watch the honeybees at BeeCamp, we are constantly amazed by something that feels almost miraculous—and yet happens every day.
No one is giving them orders. Each bee in the hive has a different role, and they communicate with one another in ways that help maintain and sustain the colony. Somehow, all of that communication leads to decisions made by the colony as a whole.
There is no leader giving instructions. Even the queen is simply one member of the colony, playing her own role. And eventually, she leaves with part of the colony, leaving the hive to the next generation.
There are other eusocial insects, such as ants and bumblebees, but what we find especially fascinating about honeybees is that their ability as a colony seems to stand out far more than the ability of any individual bee.
We can actually observe behavior that makes it seem as though the entire colony has a mind of its own.
But here is the important part:
It’s not because every bee is doing the same thing.
Each member of the colony has a different role. And it is the combination of all those different roles that creates the movement and decision-making of the colony as a whole.
To put it simply, perhaps it’s a little like the organs of the human body. Each has a completely different function, but together they make one human being function as a whole.
When we think about how we run BeeCamp, we sometimes feel that there is something very similar happening here.
The many people around us—our customers, individuals, and businesses we collaborate with, whether they are close by or far away—are all moving according to their own ideas and motivations.
And yet, somehow, BeeCamp itself seems to act as a catalyst.
A small part of what each person is doing becomes connected to BeeCamp, and together, those individual activities may end up playing a role in supporting BeeCamp as one living, moving community.
And now, it looks like the construction right in front of us may finally be finished next year.
We’re excited to see BeeCamp enter its next stage.
We will continue to create and nurture a BeeCamp worthy of being that kind of catalyst.
